Historical Background
The Romans faced a number of great enemies, such as the Gauls, Germans, Persians, Parthians, and Dacians. One of the greatest enemies faced by Rome however were the Carthaginians, whose armies led by the Hannibal threatened Rome itself during the Second Punic War.

Hannibal's victory over the Romans at the Battle of Cannae in 216 BCE was one of the most devestating defeats suffered by Romans in their long history.
